Dr. Barbara Zajc

Dr. Barbara Zajc is a member of Area Group 1 of the RCMI. Research in her group is in the area of organofluorine chemistry and chemical carcinogenesis.

Research is focused in two main directions. One direction involves development of methods for regiospecific introduction of fluorine into organic molecules. For this, synthesis and reactivity of specific fluorinated building blocks is explored, leading to diverse fluorinated molecules via a modular assembly approach. In this manner, a series of novel reagents for the synthesis of variously functionalized vinyl fluorides is being developed. Another direction of research involves the use of fluorine as probe in structure activity studies in the area of chemical carcinogenesis. Some of the methods developed are applied to synthesizing specifically fluorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, their metabolites and their DNA conjugates as probes to understanding cellular events after metabolism and DNA binding.
